Homemade Skunk-Off Recipe
Dog got sprayed by a skunk? Pee-ew!!
Your best bet for getting the stink out is a commercial product like this, but in a pinch there is a home-made version you can create using handy household items.
The following recipe does work (it's even been tested by Mythbusters!), just keep in mind that the peroxide portion can sometimes discolour your pet's fur, especially for those with darker coats.
Ingredients
- 1 Litre of 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 1/4 cup of baking soda
- 1teaspoon of liquid hand soap (not detergent or dishwashing soap)
Instructions
Bathe your dog in this mixture a few times and rinse well with warm water. The peroxide in this solution could definitely hurt your dog’s eyes, so make sure to avoid getting any there, and rinse well with tap water or contact lens saline if you do.
Safety tips:
- There’s no way to safely store it. If you put all the ingredients in a bottle and place it on a shelf it will explode, so just make enough for one bath.
- While most cases of a dog getting skunked are simply stinky and inconvenient, severe cases can actually be toxic and have serious health consequences. If your dog seems unwell after getting sprayed by a skunk, don't delay - please contact your local Emergency Clinic
Here’s to a safe, stink-free and skunk-free summer!
